SFS framing and boarding

Light gauge steel framing system (SFS) infill walls from slab to soffit, sheathed and ready for the external envelope.

Light gauge steel SFS infill wall framing with insulation installed inside a steel-framed building

SFS, or steel framing system, is the light gauge steel infill that forms the external walls between the floors and the main structural frame. It is specialist first-fix work and a core part of what we do.

Infill walls

We set out, fix and plumb SFS studs and tracks from slab to soffit, with deflection head details to the structural engineer's requirements. Openings for windows and doors are framed with the correct lintel and jamb details so the glazing contractor has a true, square opening to fix to.

Sheathing and weathering

Once the frame is complete we fix the external sheathing board, typically a cement particle or gypsum sheathing board depending on the specification, and prepare it for the breather membrane and the external envelope that follows.

Sequencing

SFS sits on the critical path: the building cannot be made weathertight until it is done. We plan the work floor by floor to suit the frame erection and the cladding or brickwork behind us, and we keep the main contractor informed of progress against the programme.

What we need to price it

Elevations and plans, the SFS design or performance specification, and the structural engineer's loading and deflection criteria. We work with the SFS system supplier's design where one is in place.
