MF ceilings and bulkheads

Concealed metal frame suspended ceilings, bulkheads and changes in soffit level, boarded to the acoustic and fire specification.

Metal frame ceiling grid suspended from a concrete soffit, ready for plasterboard

MF, or metal frame, is the plasterboard ceiling system that suits almost every internal space where a flat, concealed finish is wanted rather than an exposed grid.

The system

A primary channel is hung from the soffit on hangers, furring channels are clipped beneath it, and plasterboard is screwed to the furring to give a fully concealed grid. The board type and the number of layers come from the fire and acoustic requirements for the space, and the finish is taped and jointed or skimmed to match the walls.

Bulkheads and level changes

Most ceilings are not one flat plane. We build bulkheads to conceal ductwork and structure, step the soffit level between rooms and corridors, and frame around access hatches and recessed fittings. All of it is set out from the drawings before boarding starts, so the lines are straight and the heights are right.

Working with M&E

Ceilings close over everyone else's work, so sequencing matters. We coordinate with the mechanical and electrical trades on the programme, leave access where it is needed and do not close up until the services above have been signed off.

What we need to price it

Reflected ceiling plans, the ceiling type schedule with ratings, and sections through any bulkheads. If the design is still developing, a scope and a walk round the building is enough to give you a budget figure.
